L.A’s Tokimonsta drops her highly anticipated debut album, landing on the Japanese imprint, Listen Up, a subsidiary of the Art Union conglomerate. As indicated by her 12″ and the growing bluster of hype surrounding her work, ‘Midnight Menu’ is a very satisfying experience, double dipped in sunny, soul rich atmospheres and conjuring a splendidly laidback and loved-up L.A. vibe that’s at once complementary, and yet distinct from her circle of peers which includes the likes of Flying Lotus, Samiyam and Daedelus. While the tempos are largely in the slumped and head nodding region, she proves some versatile dancefloor chops on the tropical waves of ‘Death By Disco’, and hen she moves away from the soul sampling like on the Eastern tuning of ‘Sa Mo Jung’ with its effortless incorporation of (we’re guessing) Korean instrumentation, she moves up another notch in our estimations.
